“All The News You Never Knew You Needed To Know …Until Now.”
In The News: Congress is on the move and the nation is NOT safe: The Military Appropriations bill AKA “veto bait” is on the floor of the House, a pair of $300 BILLION dollar emergency housing bills (mortgage housing crisis bill to bail out the lenders, not emergency housing for the homeless working class population of America)coming up… Also, the Farm Bill, another $300 BILLION with 60% going to Food Stamps, WIC, Seniors, etc… another 30% of the farm bill consists of subsidies for cotton and rice growers. Most of the rice subsidies are targeted for Louisiana even though 85% of the food rice in the US is grown in California. Details.
One over-arching question that might be asked:
“Why does US agri-business need to be subsidized at all?”

Multinationals making billions in profit from food crisis
World Development Movement director calls earnings ‘immoral’Giant agri-businesses are enjoying soaring profits as a result of the world food crisis that is driving millions of people towards starvation, British newspaper The Independent reported on Sunday.
The report quotes World Bank figures that 100 million more people are facing severe hunger this year, saying that some of the world’s richest food companies are making record profits. In Full

100s of thousands of people in the streets of Lebanon on strike.
More from Juan Cole:
Violence in Lebanon
Courtesy al-HayatFirst, the General Confederation of Labour Unions (CGTL) in Lebanon called a strike to protest the failure of the government to agree to a substantial rise in the minimum monthly way. Then the strike turned violent, as the Hizbullah joined in. People closed off roads and set out burning tires. The airport was badly affected, stranding 200 passengers. Aljazeera says that the airport is closed on Thursday Arab satellite channels were showing streets crowded with Lebanese army and police, with staccatto machine gun bursts in the background. About 10 people were lightly wounded.
It isn’t really clear what the relationship is between the labor unions and their strike for better wages, and the military confrontations with the strikers.
I do know that on the other side, the Bush administration has worked hard to polarize Lebanese society and security, rather than working for a national unity government. [Source, Juan Cole’s Informed Comment]
