“All The News You Never Knew You Needed To Know …Until Now.”
In The News: Sending in the heavies: Dick Cheney is going to Georgia, Ukraine, and other “undisclosed locations”, which MAY not be so undisclosed… Heres a google search for Ambrosetti Forum, described as “The annual Ambrosetti Forum is Italy’s own mini-Davos set next to Lake Como.” (Financial Times) and Condi Rice is in Israel, who have just released approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners, including one who has been imprisoned for thirty years. More.
A land mine on the railroad tracks from Azerbaijan to the Georgian coast shuts down Azeri oil deliveries as low intensity warfare continues, except in Georgia where all appears to be quiet. Details.
Good luck Ahmed - There is a purge of the Afghani military in progress. The intent seems to be the breaking up of tribal affiliations which is deeply ingrained in the culture.
The Democratic Extravaganza in Denver begins today on the 40th anniversary of the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.
CNN: “This week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, and the Republican convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, which begins September 1, have been designated “national special security events,” which means the Secret Service is responsible for planning and implementing a security scheme for each city.
“We’ve been preparing for 15 months and we feel very confident,” said Darrin Blackford, Secret Service spokesman.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees the Secret Service, 24-hour operations centers have been set up in each city to monitor the conventions and surrounding areas.
At the Denver joint operations center, the Secret Service will be able to communicate with at least 62 federal, state and local agencies involved in the security plan, ranging from the Department of Homeland Security to the local power utility.

The Federal Protective Service is providing explosive-sniffing dogs, uniformed officers and undercover agents as well as mobile command vehicles. The FBI, armed with a new system that allows instant communication between field offices, will also be at both convention sites in force to monitor and react to any potential terror threats.
The Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Immigration and Customs Enforcement will provide assistance as well.
The military also is helping. The North American Aerospace Defense Command is prepared to provide air cover and medical assistance, while the Coast Guard will cover the Mississippi River when the Republicans meet in Minneapolis-St. Paul. The Minnesota National Guard also said it will have 1,000 troops standing by.” In Full

There will be $50 million dollars spent to ‘control’ the protests this year.
From Roberto Lovato’s “Of América”:
“Today’s pre-Convention events here in Denver included a heavy dose of what has, since before 9-11, become a staple of coneventioneering: cops, paramilitaries and other displays of state power. I took the picture above while dining at Sam’s Diner downtown because it offers us a view into the cultural side of domestic militarism, how normal it is to sit within feet of several heavily-armed people in uniform.
I was especially taken at how the officer in the center of the picture looks like a little girl jumping out of her seat as the smiling waitress shows her a plate full of deserts. She might’ve jumped higher were it not for the weight of her thick revolver, her batons, her mace and other weapons she and others from among the thousands of police, secret service, FBI and other security agents attending the Convention wore. And though they weren’t wearing any of the ubiquitous red, white and blue plastic badges plastering chests all over this place, those wearing silver badges and paramilitary get-ups got VIP treatment as when those of us standing in line at Sam’s watched them cut in front of us on their way to eating cake. More From Patterico’s Pontifications: “I don’t care what Denver does to enforce order at the Democratic National Convention (or, for that matter, what Minneapolis-St. Paul does at the Republican Convention), but I wonder why more Democratic leaders aren’t complaining about Denver’s secret jails with the same fervor reserved for Guantanamo:
“The newly created lockup is on the northeast side of Denver. Protesters have already given this place a name: “Gitmo on the Platte.””
Inside are dozens are metal cages. They are made out of chain link fence material and topped by rolls of barbed wire.
“This is a secured environment,” Capt. Frank Gale of the Denver Sheriff’s Department told CBS4. “We’re concerned about how that’s going to be utilized by people who will be potentially disruptive.”
In past conventions, mass arrests have taken place.
With Denver’s jails already overflowing, new space had to be created and officers trained.
Each of the fenced areas is about 5 yards by 5 yards and there is a lock on the door. A sign on the wall reads “Warning! Electric stun devices used in this facility.”
If he wants to be consistent, I think Barack Obama should condemn actions like this by the City of Denver. After all, he doesn’t want to risk losing the endorsement of those 80 volunteer lawyers representing Gitmo detainees.” Source: Patterico’s Pontifications
…and from the NY Times:
Denver Police Brace for Convention
By DAVID JOHNSTON and ERIC SCHMITT
WASHINGTON — Federal and local authorities are girding for huge protests, mammoth traffic tie-ups and civil disturbances at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this month, fearing that the convention will become a magnet for militant protest groups.
Officials say that what makes Denver different than past conventions is the historic nature of Senator Barack Obama’s nomination, a megawattage event whose global spotlight could draw tens of thousands of demonstrators, including self-described anarchists who the police fear will infiltrate peaceful protest groups to disrupt the weeklong event.
